I can safely say that I have heard a lot of ignorant statements during high school. One of piece of ignorance that has really stuck with me is "Why learn how movies are made? It would just ruin the movie." These types of people are under the impression just because I pick a movie apart, it must mean I hate movies in general. In actuality, I pick apart movies because I love them. Think about it, if there is a movie that has affected me to the point where I have to take the time to write about it, then isn't it doing its job in provoking thought and leaving an impression on an audience member?
I have always loved movies, and the magic that goes into making them. I grew up in a house with a lot of movies, and when DVD's came out and we got to see how movies were made it was like my brother and I found Narnia. To see how much work goes into something as complex as the illusion of a visual story on your TV screen is like watching a unicorn be dissected. Okay, that might be a bit morbid, but don't tell me you wouldn't be fascinated to see what a unicorn is made out of! (I bet they're made of dreams and Nutella).
So to hear someone say that they wouldn't want to know how a movie is made or to learn what makes a movie good, it just makes me sad. In knowing what is sacrificed and given into making a work of art like a movie, it makes me appreciate even more when a movie does something right. When I don't like a movie, especially one that is really popular, then the whole world blows up. This is true for any movie buff.
Some people might criticize you and say something along the lines of "how can you not like it?! You have no soul!" I have an opinion, so I obviously have a soul, thank you very much. "How dare you criticize something that I like! Stop making me feel bad and stupid for liking something!" This is a very common mentality towards critics. To that I say, if I do make you feel bad for liking a movie, then stop it. You shouldn't hold my opinion in that high of esteem. I'd be flattered, but it's not realistic. Like whatever movie you want, I don't care.
My blog is just an expression of my thoughts and opinions in hopes to provoke thought or, at the very least, entertain. I'm not here to tell you what to think or do. Art, which movies are, is subjective. You cannot state your opinion as a fact, because that would be contradictory.
I care about movies, how they are made, and what makes them good or bad because they are an art form I am passionate about. I am passionate about storytelling in general, and movies are the most popular form so that makes them easy to talk about. Most people view movies as simple forms of entertainment and don't give much thought into them, and I think that's kind of sad. Movies are forms of art that are supposed to provoke thought, as well as entertain. If a movie has absolutely no affect on me whatsoever, then it fails as art.
