Bad Movies That I Like

I decided to talk about some bad movies that I happen to enjoy. I'm sure everyone has at least one relatively unpopular/unknown movie that makes you feel as if you are the only one that enjoys it. I don't like using the term "guilty pleasure" in terms of movies, because I shouldn't feel guilty for liking a movie. It's not a crime to like a movie, and it shouldn't say anything bad about my character. I'm not going to convince you to like these movies, it's more like a confession to maybe make my audience feel more comfortable with the movies they enjoy. In no particular order, these are my top 5 "guilty pleasure" movies.

1. Rent
This isn't technically a good movie in my opinion. I also don't really care for some of the songs. Some of the songs aren't that memorable and just feel like filler, like the creator felt like he needed to fill a quota. The characters can also be really pretentious at times. However, I can't help liking this movie. I like it's message of being yourself and treasure those you care about. There are songs that I really like and scenes that still affect me ever since I first saw it in high school.

2. Twilight
If this was the only movie and book in the series, I would totally be okay with it. That rant is for another day though. I think this movie, on its own, is hilarious to watch. For me, it's the right amount of bad to enjoy, but only if I only see it on a rare occasion. If I were to watch it as much as the others on this list, I would get sick of it. I mostly watch it with a friend if we happen to catch it on TV. There may come a day where I have seen it so much that I will create a drinking game dedicated to it.

3. The Phantom of the Opera
Another musical, but this one is worse than Rent, but more hilariously bad than Twilight. I can watch this movie a hundred times and still enjoy it. Some moments make me cringe like Butler's scream-singing, Rossum's so-not-trained-in-opera singing style, the way everyone in this universe shuns the actual opera singer, but some moments can be very sincere. Like "Wish You Were Somehow Here" is a beautiful song and the lyrics have a lot of heart to them and Butler's version of "Music of the Night" is nice and soothing.

4. My Best Friend's Wedding
This movie has a lot of flaws, and not a lot of people seem to remember it. I was in a weird mood to watch a Julia Roberts chick-flick while browsing Netflix one day, and I decided to give it a chance. I haven't looked back since. It has some really weird moments that make me think the movie was originally supposed to be a musical. Or maybe the director is trying to be sneaky about it. There are scenes where characters are forced into singing or they just randomly sing for no reason. What I do enjoy about this film is it's humor and how it ends. The plotting, conniving Roberts character doesn't get the man at the end. How many chick flicks do you know that are about losing an ex and learning to let them go sincerely?

5. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
I know, I know. I grew up with the original series and it's still freaking awesome in modern day times. However, we can't pretend that the original trilogy was perfect. I don't think this movie was that far out from the original story. Yes, I acknowledge its flaws, and there are some that bothered me. But it's still an exciting adventure with one my favorite childhood characters with a supernatural twist. If anyone else had handled the project it would have been a lot worse. Yes, that's possible, trust me. Remember what Lucas did to the Star Wars trilogy? I rest my case.
